Fourteen: A Daughter's Memoir of Adventure, Sailing and Survival is a coming of age story. The best Memoir's in my personal opinion are the ones that not only tell a tale but can make you feel what they are feeling while also getting you to reflect on your own life. That's the thing that I loved most about this book; it told Leslie's story beautifully while connecting itself seamlessly to my own life. This book also had the bonus of providing personal pictures that helped me to really feel as I was witnessing the story as it unfolded.
There are times when a person reads a true story and are left feeling that the whole story wasn't told. That the author made things pretty to protect the readers from the whole truth. This was not the case in Fourteen. I felt that I was giving the good, bad, pretty and ugly as the author poured her heart and soul into the pages.
I give this book 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling to find their place in life. Sometimes all you need is a remember that nothing last forever not even the struggles.
