I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC (advanced reader's copy) of Chrysalis Lights. The rest of you will be able to get your hands on this gem on Halloween. What a great release day by the way since this story is about a little bit of the dark side. While the series this book is under is titled the Vampire Diaries there really isn't much mention of them. This is also the second book in the series although this is a collaboration series so each book is written by a different author. Chrysalis Lights is about witches and past family serects. I didn't read the first book but did not feel like there were parts of this one that had no explanation. Now that I got that out the way let me tell you what I liked and didn't like about the book.
The beginning of the story pulled me in. The preface sets the story. There we are faced with an evil presence that isn't really explained until later. There's enough details to make it interesting but not to much that I felt like I knew what was going on. The main character of the story Bonnie was well written there was a depth to her that made it pleasant to read. The setting of the small town made it perfect to connect the supporting characters and even the preface that I loved so much. THe details about the town also made it easy to envision what I was reading. If you follow my blog then you know that I love a good backstory and the author did a really good job of revealing the past. It was like a puzzle piece that was slowly fitting into place. There was also side stories that were going on however the overall story didn't seem overwhelming. Everything fit in the story.
I give this book 4 stars. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 was because there were parts in the book that I wanted things to get a little darker. The story had a great build up to dark magic but it didn't really reveal the true power of what it could do. Or rather what I felt it could do based on what we learn from the past. The ending felt to neat to me. I guess I was just looking for a good old fight between the forces. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read books that are a little outside of the box. And while I haven't read the other books I will surely be putting them in my to be read pile.
