Yesterday I attended my first ever Bookcon in New York and for the most part I had an amazing time. Bookcon this year was a two day event on May 30th and 31st. I only attended Saturday the first day so that is what I will be talking about. The floor show opened up at 10am for those of us that either did not buy V.I.P tickets or got their tickets at the door like I did. Having seen from some of my instagram friends that the lines were massive when it first opened, I decided to wait until the afternoon to head in. I will say that if you want to go later you run the risk of missing out on the free stuff. This wasn't my main purpose for attending and so I wasn't to concerned about it. Upon arrive I got three tickets, my daughter who is 7 and my Mr. attended the event with me. Most of the panel discussions were full to capacity when we arrived by not all. There also were public discussions on the Downtown Stage (the main floor) that was set up so you could still attend even if you didn't have a seat. We sat and listened to the Creative Journey discussion which I found fascinating. This discussion was about following your dreams and how to make your dreams come true. What I loved about Bookcon was that there where a few authors that I was able to have a chat with. Some booths really did have to many people waiting in their line and so I decided not to wait because I was late to the game and wanted to meet as many people as I could. Most of the authors that I talked to was grateful for an chance to promote their work and I didn't feel pressured to buy their book. This was a huge plus for me as I can across one author that did not even introduce herself before shoving a book in my face and telling me the price. There was also a lot of authors and books for my daughter. I don't know why I hadn't thought about that before hand but I was grateful for it. Notable Authors at Bookcon for me and my family were T.T Toon. My daughter actually was the one that went to this booth first. I had a nice talk with her and learned that she is a children's book author who is also about to launch her own publishing company. She was friendly with my daughter and wasn't bothered by the fact that by the time my daughter reached her booth she had spent her allowance already. Lizzy Ford & Julia Crane. Lizzy wasn't at Bookcon however she sent copies of her book with fellow author Julia Crane to distribute. I had one on reserve as I follow both of them on Instagram and put one aside. Julia was really sweet and took a moment to meet with me even with her booth having traffic. She also gave me an ARC copy of her new novella. Felicia Starr, Marissa Honeycutt & H.D Gordon. These lovely ladies shared a booth and each of them took the time to interact with me and my daughter. I had heard of Felicia Starr before and although I had one clicked a book of Marissa Honeycutt it was lost in the sea of books already purchased on Kane (my kindle). H.D. Gordon was completely new to me so I picked up a signed copy of her book. There were lots of others that I meet be these ones left a lasting impression on me because they took the time to be friendly, share their stories and thank me for my interest in their work. I look forward to attending Bookcon next year and will try to be more proactive and get the V.I.P tickets before they sell out. LET US DISCUSS: HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED BOOKCON OR ANY OTHER BOOK CONVENTION? IF SO HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE? DO YOU THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN? IF NOT HOW COME? | |
