Bookcon was a few days ago and I had the pleasure of attending with my nine year old daughter Jae-R. Throughout the day she would make her to booths interacting with authors and finding new books she wanted to read. One booth that she stumbled upon was the MVP Kids booth. There we chatted with both the author and the illustrator. I got the oppountinuty to receive a copy of Celebrate! Our Differences which I will be reviewing in just a moment but first let me tell you a little about the series and why I love what they are doing. The real MVP Kids are books written to make every child feel like they are important. At their Bookcon booth they had these trading cards laid out and there was a character that reflected ever child. The current books that are out are geared towards a younger age group but they are expanding and writting books using the same kids and maybe even some new ones just aging the characters and making the book topics age appropriate. Jae-R is a little to old for the book that I got but she is excited for the new series that's do out later this year.
Okay so lets talk about the book Celebrate! Our Differences. This book is amazing. Everything from the message to the pictures. The pictures are just as powerful as the words in my opinion since the book is for smaller children who may not read yet. The pictures are a postive representation where all types of people are interacting together having a great time. There is a line that repeats itself every couple of pages but it doesn't get annoying it gives the words power. Knida like when people give themselves daily pep talks. The line is " we're more alike than different". This is something important because the world has a way of always pointing out what is different instead of focusing on what is the same. This books touches on things like siblings both blood and adoption, how different cultures eat the same things just using different utensils and how no matter where you are from there is always fun to be had. At the end of the book there are even helpful teaching tips for parents
I give this book 5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who has pre school age children if we are talking reading level although the message is one that someone of every age could benefit from hearing.
