Ashwin in the first book in the Gideon's Riders Series, a spin off of the Beyond Series, by Kit Rocha. If you read the Beyond Series then you will be happy to know that this one starts off with characters that we have already met while introducing us to some new characters to fall in love with. The authors do a great job bringing things that happened over the course of multiple books up to speed for those that haven't read the Beyond Series. Ashwin takes place in Sector One. This is the sector of love and faith, a holy sector. It's so different from Sector Four that is all about love through pleasure and passion. While there are some R-rated scenes in Ashwin it's not the center of it. So if you are looking for some of the same things as Sector Four you wont find it here. Sector One is different and I really enjoyed that the authors were able to create something so different while keeping some things the same. While Sector Four and Sector One get to the finish line using different paths they both have a foundation of values like respect, loyalties and family.
As I was reading this I really tried to force my mind to forget what I knew since this is a completely new series. For me this was really hard because even though Ashwin and Kora were more of supporting characters that helped in major ways I was still emotionally invested in them. I loved that actions from the past are more important than words of love. I loved that Ashwin (the title character) didn't change and yet the authors were able to make facts sound like poetry. I loved that Kora finally finds the things she had been looking for. For me something that makes a book great is when it has a solid background, when characters are giving depth and a story line is giving substance. Ashwin has a whole series of background information and that made it shine so bright for me. That's not to say that the book in itself wasn't great because it was by having a little of everything to make the story line flow. Things such as a forbidden love, funny charcaters, a little sadness, bad guys to defeat, and women that kick butt make Ashwin an all around great book.
I give this book 5 stars. While you will not get lost reading this book without reading the Beyond Series my honest opinion is that it will make reading Ashwin so much better. I recommend this series to anyone that is looking to read something that has a great balance of justice, love and faith.
